Wilberforce Institute for the study Slavery and Emancipation – WISE – High Street building
Freedom Festival Arts Trust’s 2016/2017 project Beyond Words returns for a final exhibition showing the full collection of artists’ books and exhibits that we have worked with Book Works to curate and commission over the past 18 months.
This final exhibition shows the commissions all in one place for the first time and celebrates the release of the final publication and addition to the collection by Artist Ruth Ewan.
Over Freedom Festival weekend and throughout September in 2016 six of the new commissions were exhibited in Hull’s Central Library. In the Autumn 2016 two artists’, Helen Cammock and Hannah Dawn Henderson, took up residency in Hull History Centre and WISE to research each of their commissioned books and the final two commissions were awarded to nationally acclaimed artists Lubaina Himid and Ruth Ewan.
The final exhibition of the full collection will take place at WISE (High Street, Hull) and will feature some of the selected artists multimedia work alongside all 10 publications.
The project has been realised and inspired thank to the excellent ongoing support of Hull Library services, The James Reckitt Library Trust, WISE and The History Centre.
1st until 27th September.
