Sura Medura is an International Artist Residency centre in Hikkaduwa, South West Sri Lanka. It was established in 2011 and offers funded opportunities for European (incl. UK) based artists and self-funded opportunities for artists from elsewhere.
Artists from all disciplines are invited to submit proposals to create work that is enchanted by being developed in Sri Lanka. Selected artists are offered mentorship and opportunities to meet with their peers in the Sri Lankan arts community. They are also opportunities to present the resulting work in Sri Lanka and Scotland.
The Residency Programme supports artists from all disciplines, whose work can be enhanced by being made in Sri Lanka. Residencies are for a minimum of 4 weeks and a maximum of 3 months. The Sura Medura centre can accommodate up to 10 people and there is often more than one artist staying.
We recently sent Gobbledegook Theatre’s Artistic Director and Cheif Ear Trumpeter, Lorna Rees, out to Sri Lanka on a 6-week residency, you can read more about her trip and her work here: https://gobbledegooktravel.blogspot.co.uk/
Freedom Festival Arts Trusts own Artistic Director, Mikey Martins, will soon travel to Sura Medura to join Lorna and the other artists currently in residence. Check back soon to find out how he gets on!
