Re:Discovered.  Re:Imagined.  Re:Interpreted.  Re:Created.

Breathing new life into old film.

Re:Score showcases a diverse collective of independent musical artists who have scored original compositions and fresh soundtracks to seemingly forgotten archive film footage.

Commissioned by Freedom Festival Arts Trust and presented at The Awakening March 2022, its initial creation was a way of driving audiences to significant cultural landmarks within the city of Hull as part of an outdoor cinema experience. Beautifully using the environment and the historic buildings that line the streets by projecting on to them at night, Re:Score allowed the audience to connect with warm, nostalgic footage from the past with a reimagined, bespoke musical soundtrack.

Produced by The Broken Orchestra and in association with Yorkshire Film Archive, Re:Score is the coming together of a diverse range of musical artists, to create original compositions that sit alongside culturally important archive films. What is achieved can be enjoyed as a stand alone, part of a larger collection or be displayed and projected as part of a festival, commission or larger event for a truly unique, romantic and sentimental experience for the audience.

Ten years of creativity, expansion and development has seen The Broken Orchestra morph into more than just a music production duo. Regularly receiving air play from the likes BBC Introducing’s Tom Robinson & Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 6 Music. They have also played live in some of the UK’s most prestigious venues during the last three years including Hare and Hounds (Birmingham), Band on the Wall (Manchester), Hifi Club (Leeds) and Hoochie Coochie (Newcastle).

Extremely proud of their hometown of Hull they are supported extensively by local partners such as BBC Introducing Humberside and Humber Street Sesh and have been lucky enough to have been commissioned to work with such brilliant festivals as Freedom Festival Arts Trust, Hull Jazz Festival, BBC Contains Strong Language as well commissions for BBC Radio 4.

Low Hummer

Low Hummer are a fast-rising six piece from Hull that write about their life in deepest darkest East Yorkshire and their place in a world of consumerism and bad news stories sold as gospel. Daniel, Aimee, Steph, Jack, John and Joe came together from the far corners of the city’s tight knit DIY community. Championed by Huw Stephens (Radio 1), Steve Lamacq (6 Music), Marc Riley (6 Music), Tom Robinson (6 Music), the Amazing Radio A list, NME, Gigwise and Under The Radar Magazine they have also had support from BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders and Gemma Bradley, as well as added to Radio 1’s playlist as BBC Introducing’s Track Of The Week and playlisted on Spotify’s New Music Friday UK, Dreampop, melomania, Alt.Rocked and Hot New Bands (Cover Photo).

Wai Wan

'Hull Street Scenes' 1954

Wai is second-generation British-born Chinese raised in Hull by Hong Kong Chinese parents. As an artist, producer and remixer, he has released music for major and independent labels, internationally for over twenty years, receiving support from the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 6), Mixmaster Morris (NTS Radio). His single Goddess was ranked amongst the all-time top twenty Nu-Jazz records on Worldwide FM. Following the release of his album Distraction, Wai has since performed across venues in Leeds, Manchester, New York, and London, including the legendary Plastic People, Hacienda, Band on the Wall and Big Chill festival. He has also worked on collaborative commissions for Castlefield Gallery, Studio Eleven as part of the BBC Contains Strong Language, PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music Biennial.

Wai’s recent explorations into music composition involves modular synthesis and the manipulation of field recordings, juxtaposing familiar sentiments in unfamiliar settings through the notion of imagined nostalgia. He currently lectures and works as the Technical Resource Manager at the University of Hull’s Music Department.

Katie Spencer

'Stirling Ash' 1975

 

Raised in the East Yorkshire flatlands on the fringes of Hull, Katie Spencer’s landscape has always been that of open skies and widening rivers. Industry still shapes the city here. The people, as with the land, are moulded by tides and stark horizons. Stand in the same place for long enough and you can watch the sun rise over the North Sea and then sink into crop fields, glowing auburn in late-summer sun. It is this sense of space and movement that flows through Katie Spencer’s music.

The songwriting, and most notably her guitar playing stems from a time when the steel-stringed instrument was truly finding its voice. Artists like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and perhaps most evidently Michael Chapman, flow into her sound, carrying with them the warmth and idealism of the early 70’s folk and songwriter movements.

Katie Spencer’s highly anticipated new album, The Edge of the Land (2022), follows her debut release, Weather Beaten (2019) which was praised for its unique song-craft, spell-binding musicianship and crystal sonic clarity, as she brought together fans of music from all backgrounds and walks of life.
