The first Freedom Festival was held in 2008 – a one-day pilot event on Saturday 30 August. The event aimed to celebrate freedom in all its forms and pay tribute to Hull’s most famous son, William Wilberforce.
The main festival stage during Freedom’s inaugural year was set in Queen’s Gardens and featured Bollywood dancers, a silent disco and a programme of family entertainment. The Magic Numbers and Noah and the Whale and local rising stars The Paddingtons also appeared. Images courtesy of photographers Tom Arran, Neil Nicklin, Sean Spencer, Jon Fish and Jerome Whittingham.
