A series of abstract paintings which have evolved from time spent at Julian’s Bower medieval turf maze, Alkborough in North Lincolnshire. Annie’s work is based around her interest in landscape, history, archaeology and myths. The turf maze and the landscape around it, have a special, timeless atmosphere. The convergence of three rivers add to the feeling that this place has been important to our ancestors for hundreds of years. The idea of ‘Thin Places’ is often applied to places where there is a sense of something that transcends the everyday world.

Annie spends time in a landscape, sitting and walking to experience the whole ‘feel’ of a place. She listens to the sounds, walking with bare feet and sketching. Then it's back to the studio and the development of the larger paintings which can take weeks or months. There is no plan, just the knowledge that elements of the chosen landscape will find their way into the work.

Annie’s links to the landscape go back to her childhood and time spent with her family in remote places, roaming free and experiencing the natural world. Her interest in ancient standing stones and burial sites come from her mother who took her off following grid references to find these hidden places.

Underlying much of Annie’s work is her belief that in order for us to protect and preserve our natural world, we need to connect with it in a way that our ancestors did all those years ago. We need to see how it can feed us spiritually and connect in a way that goes beyond taking photographs of the views we see.

The paintings themselves are mixed media, with many layers and take weeks to complete. In a way, they are a reflection of the landscape and the history within the earth; hidden marks, scratches, lumps, and many layers. The process is a rollercoaster of emotions, with times when the painting is not going well, but the the euphoria of something truly exciting.
