Step right up! An opportunity for festival-goers of all ages to come and play street chess, on a giant chess set or on public tables – helped (if needed) by experienced chess players.

A great way to make new friends, learn some new skills or just have a fun time - competitive spirit not essential, but if you're feeling up for it, come take on the experts.

The Hull & District Chess Association has run summer-long Play Chess Festivals in 2021 and 2022.

This has involved promoting chess in public-facing events in shopping centres (Princes Quay and Flemingate), parks (Pearson Park, Alderman Kneeshaw, Queens Gardens, East Park), squares (Trinity, Queen Victoria), cafés, bars, libraries and quaysides.

We're delighted to have them with us at Freedom Festival - we love street chess and especially the way it brings strangers together over the shared love of the game. Come and get involved, you may even find yourself making new friends
