Introduced at the first Awakening in 2022, the #FreedomFox represented Fox Fires, the Finnish translation of Aurora Borealis.

Now, the fox mask is continued as a tradition as the people of Hull don the fox mask as we come together to celebrate the end of winter and reflect on our heritage and history in the city centre. Not only are these masks environmentally conscious, using recyclable or reused materials to craft, but the creation of these masks have become an activity within themselves for the Awakening.  Last year were a source of joy to see so many people, young and old, wearing these fox masks in the audiences of events all throughout the festival.

The #FreedomFox was created by Wintercroft Masks. Steve and Marianne Wintercroft have been designing and supplying unique masks to creative people all over the World since 2013. They create masks that could be built by anyone, using local materials, removing the need for mass manufacturing or shipping and with the minimum environmental impact. In a varied career Steve has published seven papercraft books and worked on projects for Damien Hirst, Sir Paul McCartney, Björk and Game of Thrones.

The Awakening Festival 2022-43

At the end of February, 23,000 mask packs have been sent out to primary school pupils, in partnership with Maritime Hull. Every single primary school-aged pupil in Hull will receive the mask template to make at home, or in class, and bring along to wear at The Awakening. Keep an eye out for the masks in book bags in the coming week or two and contact your school if you don’t receive one!

This mask can be a little complicated, and so we are aiming to provide more in-person opportunities for fox mask making this year. Anyone wanting to make a Freedom Fox can pop in anytime to one of our sessions and learn to make a mask with us and the lovely team at ScrapStore. We will also have a last minute chance during The Awakening at the Fox Den in Queens Gardens: remember queues will be long, so if you can make a mask before then (or during our workshop on Saturday 18th!), we highly encourage it. The full list of dates can be found below!
